- Describe the brain’s relation to essence, spirit, and sensory function.
- Explain the role of bones and marrow in body strength, movement, and pathology.
- Summarize the Mai (vital circulation) as network of life and relation to blood, heart, and qi.
- Understand the gallbladder and uterus as Extraordinary Fu linked to decision-making and reproduction.
Course Overview
Besides the Five Zang and Six Fu, which form the Twelve Viscera governing the organism, there is a series of six additional functions called the Six Extraordinary Fu (qi heng zhi fu).
They consist of the brain, bone marrow, bones, vital circulations (mai), gallbladder, and uterus.
They resemble the Zang organs because they store the essences in different forms, yet they are called Fu. Nevertheless, they are among the most important and vital functions in the body. They work with the essences in a remarkable succession to produce and develop a being, to maintain its life, and to ensure its reproduction.
Course Focus
Each of these functions will be studied individually, while also revealing their connections within the group of the Six Extraordinary Fu.
Special Focus on the Brain
A detailed study will be made of the brain — not only as the Sea of Marrow, but also as the place where the essences of the kidneys and the spiritual brightness unite.
This union allows the best possible relationship between the sense organs and the heart.
The brain is also traversed by numerous meridians, both ordinary and extraordinary. Their functions relate closely to those of the brain, bringing to it the most refined and clear yang.
Teaching Method and Sources
The presentations are entirely based on classical Chinese medical texts, directly translated and explained. The key characters are analysed and their meanings clarified. The clinical relevance of each concept is demonstrated throughout the course.
