The Inner Development of the Acupuncturist
Taking this course, you will
- Identify the core physician-virtues highlighted in Chinese and Western medical classics.
- Analyze how clear intention (yì) influences clinical outcome and patient rapport.
- Apply at least three self-cultivation practices (e.g., centering breath, reflective journaling, pre-treatment ritual) to enhance clinical presence.
- Draft a 7-day pilot plan for cultivating one chosen virtue, with guidance on how to extend it beyond the first week.
- Evaluate recent patient encounters through the lens of shēng rén attributes to pinpoint areas for growth.
‘Medicine is intention (yi). Those who are proficient at using intention are good doctors.’
– Sun Simiao
Course Overview
Modern acupuncture training equips us with sound theory and reliable technique—but clinical excellence asks for more.
In this one-hour master-class, veteran practitioner Peter Mole (drawing on sources from the Nei Jing, Sun Simiao and Confucian ethics to Hippocrates and Avicenna) explores the inner work that turns competent technicians into inspiring healers. You will examine the classical idea of the shēng rén—“one who, through his power, awakens and develops people’s higher nature”—and translate its timeless virtues into everyday, clinic-ready habits.
Expect reflective discussion, historical insight and practical exercises you can use tomorrow to strengthen intention (yì), presence and compassionate action.
