With this 6-hour deep-dive into classical texts, you will:

  • Explain the clinical relevance of the Five Elements (wu xing 五行) as organising forces in nature and the human person, in order to apply this framework meaningfully in practice.
  • Recognise how each of the Five zang organs represents and expresses one quality of vital qi, and use this understanding to inform clinical observation and diagnosis.
  • Identify the physiological, psychological, and pathological patterns of the Five zang organs and their interactions, strengthening diagnostic coherence and clinical decision-making.

Course Overview

Many practitioners learn the Five Elements as a diagnostic tool, but without access to the classical roots it can feel simplistic or disconnected from clinical reality. In this course, Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée brings her lifetime of scholarship to reveal the deep meaning of the Five Elements and the images of the zang organs (zang xiang 臟象). These teachings bring coherence to the complexity of physiology, psychology and pathology — strengthening both your theoretical foundation and your clinical confidence.

From Nature to the Human Person

The general meaning of the Five Elements (Phase or Agents) as organizers of life in the universe, in all forms of life and in the human person. These Five moving forces that we can observe in nature became the pattern for an efficient knowledge of the functioning of the body, the mind and the Spirit.

The Zang Organs, Vital Qi, and Clinical Application

Each of the Five zang organ is seen as the representative of one of the Five Elements; each zang organ is first understood as the working and the effects of one of these Five quality of the vital qi.

The application of the yin and yang and Five Elements theory provided patterns for all possible interactions of qi. Although we don’t go into any detail, the students will understand the physiological, psychological and pathological outlines for each of the Five zang organs, as well as their interplay. This will give greater solidity and coherence to the diagnosis.

Interactive Class

This live training with Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée will not only present the classical foundations of the Five Elements and the zang organs, but also allow space for interaction. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, clarify complex points, and engage directly with Elisabeth, making the study both rigorous and accessible.
