What will you learn

  • Discover research in acupuncture pain modulation involving neuropeptides in the brain and limbic system, the peripheral nervous system, and the proteins and cells of the immune system that are involved in inflammation and tissue repair.
  • Understanding how different drugs and different acupuncture point regimens affect different parts of our body and reduce pain in different ways.

Course Overview

Our perception of pain involves multiple systems and mechanisms working independently and together taking cues from one another like the instruments and section of an orchestra. Research has shown that acupuncture is effective for many different pain syndromes with many different causes. Currently the NIH is pushing for more research into why acupuncture is effective for different kinds of pain.

This course provides an overview of how pain is perceived, and the existing research that sheds light on the multiple central and peripheral bio-mechanisms behind the analgesic effects of acupuncture.

Upon completion of the course the students should have a basic understanding of how different drugs and different acupuncture point regimens affect different parts of our body and reduce pain in different ways. Participants will be exposed to research in acupuncture pain modulation involving neuropeptides in the brain and limbic system, the peripheral nervous system, and the proteins and cells of the immune system that are involved in inflammation and tissue repair.
