Course Overview

Bladder 43 – GAO HUANG SHU is a special acupuncture point located on the outer line of the bladder channel at the level of the Pericardium Shu point. Its name relates to the Gao and the Huang membranes. Gao is a fatty, greasy tissue. In the Hou Hanshu (History of the Former Han), Biography of Hua Tuo, the expression shen gao (神 膏, divine salve, marvellous ointment) refers to the ointment the surgeon applies to the wound after sewing up the opening made for the procedure.

Huang appears in the names of the following points: Bl.43, Gaohuangshu (膏肓兪) – Bl.51, Huangmen (肓門) – Bl.53, Baohuang (胞肓) – Bl.16, Huangshu (肓兪) (Only Kidneys and Bladder channels). This lecture by leading sinologist Elizabeth Rochat de la Vallee will give you deeper insights into these concepts by exploring the characters used in this point and the historical content.
