Dr. Stephen Birch: Treatment of Pain with Acupuncture; Toyohari, Japanese Meridian Therapy Perspectives and Strategies on Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a complex condition with evolving approaches in biomedicine. New international definitions of ‘chronic primary pain’ and ‘chronic secondary pain’ open up opportunities for acupuncture as a therapeutic option.

After briefly discussing scientific evidence for acupuncture in treatment of chronic pain conditions and accompanying problems and how medical experts have consumed that evidence, the lecture will outline how Toyohari, Meridian Therapy approaches the chronic pain patient and strategies for the treatment of the pain and patient management.

Following the lecture, participants will know more about the general treatment and management of chronic pain conditions and strategies employed by practitioners of Toyohari, Japanese Meridian Therapy for these purposes.

Learning objectives

This lecture will not include demonstrations or hands-on training, thus the learning objectives focus on knowledge of the field and conceptual understanding of the practice systems.

  • Expanding the definitions of chronic pain.
  • Review current scientific evidence for acupuncture in the treatment of chronic pain conditions.
  • Explore how scientific experts (Government-based, medical groups) have consumed that evidence and recommendations for the use of acupuncture.
  • Gain clinical and strategical approaches in the treatment of chronic pain patients.
  • Understand the needs for adjusting treatment for different chronic pain patients.
  • Know the conceptual basis of Toyohari Meridian Therapy – root & branch treatments.
  • Learn a brief description of root treatment.
  • Overview of the branch treatment approaches and their selection.

Dr. Stephen Birch PhD

Lives and practices in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and is an Associate Professor with the Kristiania University College acupuncture school in Norway.

Stephen began studying acupuncture in 1980, first learning two Chinese styles of acupuncture (including TCM) and then began working with Kiiko Matsumoto, co-authoring three books with her (including Extraordinary Vessels and Hara Diagnosis).

In 1986 he began studying in Japan, first with Yoshio Manaka co-authoring his book Chasing the Dragon’s Tail. He then started studying Toyohari – Meridian Therapy in 1988 with Kodo Fukushima, Toshio Yanagishita, Akihiro Takai and many other Toyohari teachers. He has practiced Japanese acupuncture exclusively since 1982.

Today he is the most senior Toyohari practitioner outside Japan and has taught in 23 programs in Europe and the ongoing/postponed program in Israel. He also teaches Meridian Therapy, Manaka system and Shonishin extensively around Europe and occasionally in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South America and Israel.

Dr. Birch has been involved in scientific research on acupuncture for around 30 years with a PhD focussing on trial methodologies. He is active along several scientific fronts and has tracked the scholarly literatures on acupuncture for more than 30 years.

He has written 8 books (including Understanding Acupuncture, Japanese Acupuncture, Shonishin, Restoring Order in Health and Chinese Medicine), dozens of scientific papers and dozens of clinical-scholarly papers. While Stephen Birch mostly teaches hands-on practical workshops, this lecture-only based teaching will draw from his scientific, academic and clinical studies. It should be informative providing insight into chronic pain patient treatment and management with acupuncture and insight into how Toyohari is used for this.

Hasina Erder: Changing the Brain’s Pain Perception as First Line Treatment for Pain – Japanese Acupuncture

Abstract:

When stressed the autonomic nervous system is imbalanced and shows signs of this stress. It appears as palpable sensitive spots and areas in the body, which Hasina calls the ‘Stress Map’.

Treating these spots calms the nervous system and reduces the pain dramatically.

Addressing and treating ‘brain pain perception’ is another important part of the treatment as it affects the deep source of pain.

This course is the fruit of thousands of treatments in Hasina’s clinic over the last 2 decades. Hasina says that “This way of thinking changed my clinic entirely”.

Learning Objectives:

  • Treat backache and sciatica by choosing the right points that affect the stress map and the brain’s pain perception.
  • Learn the ‘body’s stress map’.
  • Create Pain differential diagnosis.

Hasina has a Diploma in Chinese Medicine (Dipl. CM, I.A.TCM) with distinction from Hamichlala Leminhal (1997-2001), where she studied both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. In addition, she completed a 2 years program of “Kiiko Matsumoto-Style Japanese Acupuncture”.

Hasina Erder is a skilled Japanese acupuncturist, and has been practicing and teaching several Japanese acupuncture styles since 2002.

She currently teaches the Japanese style 2 year program and is giving seminars in different Japanese acupunctures styles.

Hasina is using mainly the Kiiko Matsumoto teachings. In the last 6 years she practices the Meridian-test treatments based on Prof. Mukaino Yoshito’s theory and practice.

Hasina has worked in Assaf Harofeh Hospital for many years and she is the founder and director of the Tevamed clinic, teaching and training acupuncturists.

Rani Ayal: Why do We have Neck Pains? A Classical Acupuncturist’s Approach to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neck Problems

Patients with chronic neck problems are always a challenge in the clinic – many times treatments provide relief of pain and restore mobility but, quite often, the relief is temporary and the issues are never really solved.

The reason behind this is that the neck plays a crucial role in human life – it is the connection between the head and the body; the mediator between Heaven and Earth; the vehicle of interaction between the internal Self and the exterior world.

Chronic issues of the neck point to internal imbalances, which must be addressed in order to promote long-term healing.

In this lecture we will explore the reasons behind neck pains and discuss specific diagnostic techniques, treatment strategies and point selection to improve clinical success.

Rani Ayal has been studying, practicing and teaching Chinese Medicine for over thirty years.
Initially introduced in Japan to Shiatsu and Meridian style Acupuncture, he returned to Israel in 1988 to complete his studies in Shiatsu, TCM acupuncture and herbal therapy.

Rani then continued his training in Constitutional Acupuncture – specializing in the philosophies of Five Phases and Tian Gan Di Zhi: ‘Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches’ – under master acupuncturist Joan Duveen, who continues to be his mentor to this day.

Former head of Acupuncture at the Sourasky medical center in Tel Aviv and chairman of the Israeli TCM association, Rani maintains a full-time clinic for adults and children, treating over 100 patients a week.

Rani lectures frequently in Israel and internationally and is co-author of an upcoming book on the points of acupuncture, titled the “Gates of Life”.

Bartosz Chmielnicki MD: Unblocking the Flow – Acupuncture in the Treatment of Bi Syndromes

One of the fundamental laws of Chinese Medicine teaches about the constant struggle between the upright, Zheng Qi of the body and pathogenic Xie Qi usually from the outside.

When pathogenic Qi manages to enter the channels it can block the free flow of Qi leading to various responses from the body.

In this course the ancient theory of the Bi Syndromes is discussed together with different strategies of treatment and acupuncture points.

Scientific knowledge coming from modern research in the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of arthritis will also be presented.

Learning objectives:

  • Use strategies of treatment fitting for the various kinds and stages of the disease.
  • Choose effective acupuncture points for the treatment.
  • Differentiate various kinds of Bi-obstruction Syndromes.
  • Recognise specific stages of development of the Bi Syndrome.
  • Know the modern scientific research on acupuncture for arthritis.

Bartosz Chmielnicki is a medical doctor, practicing and teaching acupuncture since 2004. In 2008 he established his TCM clinic in Katowice, and soon after he opened an Academy of Acupuncture.

In 2017 he established a new educational project – Acuart International School of Classical Acupuncture, protecting the highest standards in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine education. He shares his knowledge with great enthusiasm teaching at many international conferences, as well as in the schools in Poland, Germany, Czech Republic and Israel.

In 2014 he initiated Evidence Based Acupuncture project that turned into an international movement presenting the state of scientific research on acupuncture, and since 2011 he has been working on the Gates of Life project – the study on acupuncture points together with Rani Ayal and Yair Maimon PhD
