Dr. Dominique Hertzer: Fear/Anxiety Will Affect all Zang-Organs

“The seven feelings: joy, anger, sadness, fear, affection, hate, and desire – you know them without having learned them. (Liji)

Fear and anxiety are in Chinese medical classics as well as in philosophy not clearly differentiated. Based on the Daoist concept of fear/anxiety and its philosophical approach to deal with it, we will use classical medical texts to explore the characteristics of the emotion “fear/anxiety” as the most unique of all emotions. We will see why it is not limited to the kidneys but rather may affect all Zang-organs. Here we will introduce the phenomenon of resonance and how it explains the special relationship between fear/anxiety, shock, and the heart.

Learning Objectives

  • Deepen your understanding of the unique characteristics of fear and anxiety on the basis of philosophical/Daoist and classical medical texts.
  • Learn how to deal with fear and anxiety from the perspective of Chinese philosophical practice.
  • Understand how and why fear and anxiety may directly hurt all Zang-organs.
  • Learn the relationship of resonance between fear/anxiety, shock, and the heart.

Dominique Hertzer did her first PhD in Sinology about the Mawangdui-Yijing  and was an assistant Professor at the Ludwigs-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich from 1989 to 1996.

After her study of TCM in Munich and Tianjin (China) she finished her second Ph.D. in the field of History of Medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke with the topic: Light of the Mind and Perception of the Soul – The Medical Notion of the Psyche as an Expression of Philosophical Thought: China and the Occident.

Besides working as a TCM therapist and a Philosophical counselor,  Dominique Hertzer is continuing her research work in the field of Chinese Philosophy and Medicine as well as on Daoism, with special regard to Philosophical Practice. She is teaching at the Universities of Munich (LMU), Göttingen and Oldenburg

Assaf Mor: The Sensitive Shen Child

Highly sensitive children offer a therapeutic challenge for both parents and caregivers alike, both in diagnosing and even more in treatment, Collecting the information from a sensitive child may be difficult especially when you receive most of the information from the parent that is not always objective, or even more- ALWAYS NOT objective. Therefore, Sensitive-Shen Children demand a specific set of skills in the clinic.

Children are known as very Yang, the common interpretation is that they have hot pathologies but it is actually much broader and has to do with the phase of life and the fact that they are very connected to their Shen.

Most of the pediatric treatment traditions focus on the disharmonies of the 4 elements and not enough of the fire element. Together with the challenge of observation, the treatment of the Shen in children is often neglected and the sensitive children are left untreated.

The workshop will focus on the heart-type children and especially the sensitive Shen types and their special way of presenting disharmonies.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the role of the Shen in a child’s development.
  • Review sensitive Shen disharmonies and their manifestations.
  • Diagnose and treat sensitive Shen Children.
